The ACCA introduced its Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification in 1997. There are over 25,000 students worldwide registered for the CAT examinations, of whom about 2,500 are in the UK. The most popular overseas destinations are Singapore, Malaysia, Africa and the Caribbean.

A new scheme of CAT examinations has been introduced. The first sitting was June 2004. The final sitting of the old scheme was examined in December 2003.

Examination sittings are in June and December.
